Background of the Group:

  • Our Group was set up in 1977 at Whitford Pony Club by a few local people in the community who were interested in promoting the benefits of horse riding for people with disabilities.

  • In 2000 the Group decided that, in order to reach more people with disabilities, it needed to expand its operation and move to Totara Park, Manukau City.

  • The Totara Park Equestrian Centre Trust was founded by Whitford Riding for the Disabled and Totara Park Pony Club. These two member groups formed the TPEC Charitable Trust and committed to the development of equestrian facilities for the benefit of the whole community.

  • The Totara Park Adult Ride Group has since joined the Trust and is a very active group which uses the facilities.

  • Initial projects by the Trust saw the construction of the large arena with an all weather surface. There are now covered horse yards and a small round arena.

  • Development of the facilities is ongoing – as is the daily maintenance of the grounds

  • Totara Park Equestrian Centre is presently planning a covered riding arena which would enable RDA to ride all year round in any weather. This would provide valuable continuity for our therapy programmes.

  • At a special meeting of our group, held at our club rooms at the Totara Park Equestrian Centre on the 28th November 2005, a remit was passed unanimously to change our name from Whitford Riding for the Disabled to Totara Park Riding for the Disabled.

The group, which was started at the Whitford Pony Club in 1977, moved from their grounds in February 2001 to the present Centre. It was decided at that time to retain the "Whitford" name because of our long association with the people of Whitford.

We decided to change our name to "Totara Park" because that is where we are now based and to save confusion as to where we operate.
